Ray Smith Scholarship

The Ray Smith Scholarship recognizes and supports exceptional academic achievement and community involvement by students and family members connected to the Colorado trucking industry and to CMCA member companies in Colorado.
Overview
- Administered annually by the Colorado Motor Carriers Foundation, this scholarship is intended for graduating high school seniors or returning college students who plan to enroll in a technical/diesel/mechanical program or an accredited college. Member companies are asked to promote the opportunity across their driver, mechanic, and safety management teams.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be students or family members of individuals employed in the trucking industry or by CMCA member companies in Colorado.
- Must be a graduating high school senior or a college-bound returning student planning to attend a technical/diesel/mechanical school or an accredited college.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
About Ray Smith
Ray Smith was a forward-thinking CMCA member who championed education as a way to expand the pool of trained managers and technical specialists in Colorado’s trucking sector. The Ray Smith Scholarship has aided numerous students over the years. Contributions come from the Safety Management Council, Maintenance Council, Allied Conference, and many generous member companies—support that the Colorado Motor Carriers Association gratefully acknowledges.
Required Application Materials
1. GED, high school, or college transcript showing cumulative GPA.
2. ACT or SAT score (if applicable).
3. Documentation of academic honors, awards, or extracurricular school activities.
4. A description of your participation in community, volunteer, or other organizational activities.
5. Three (3) written recommendation letters from teachers, counselors, or employers. Letters must be dated; a mix of personal, academic, and professional references is recommended. NEW THIS YEAR: include contact information for each recommender. If you are a current Ray Smith Scholarship recipient, you must submit NEW references.
6. A brief essay (200 words or fewer) describing yourself and your goals. Current Ray Smith recipients must submit a NEW essay.
